You set two separate encryption keys (Key 1 and Key 2). GateKeyper combines them to derive a single AES-256 encryption key using PBKDF2 with 600,000 iterations. Your recovery phrase is encrypted entirely in your browser — it never leaves your device. Our server then wraps the output in a second encryption layer for anti-phishing protection.

After your browser encrypts your data, GateKeyper's server wraps it in a second AES-256 layer using a server-only secret. This means a fake site cannot produce valid GateKeyper output, and cannot decrypt real GateKeyper QR codes. When you scan a QR to decrypt, our server verifies it's genuine before proceeding.

No. Encryption happens in your browser. Your plaintext recovery phrase and your two keys never leave your device. Our server only sees the already-encrypted output — it adds its anti-phishing layer on top of your encrypted data, never on your plaintext.

You need both Key 1 and Key 2 to decrypt. If you lose either key, your encrypted data cannot be recovered — by anyone, including GateKeyper. We recommend writing both keys down and storing them separately in secure locations.
